The course starts the presentation of the main blockchain related concepts using Bitcoin as an example. Later, the presentation focuses on Ethereum explaining smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). The course is concluded with the overview of key representative business projects that are based on the Ethereum infrastructure.

The course is designed for beginners. We would advice to take it as a second course on blockchains because it does not explain thoroughly all the basic concepts. In addition, the course covers lots of material that may be challenging to comprehend for the first-timers.

There are no prerequisites for the course but having a bit of exposure to blockchains would be helpful.

  • Content

The course follows the path of increasing complexity: cryptography -> Bitcoin -> Ethereum and business applications. However, not all the basic concepts are thoroughly explained during the (video) lessons. Moreover, the course was prepared in 2018 and some blueprint business projects discussed have already changed names, Internet links, etc (uPort became Serto, Viant – Treum), which warrants even a trivial update.

  • Technology

The course covers selected technical concepts with the real world implementation examples taken from both Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains. However, we think it would be most valuable to people who have already had the first exposure to blockchains, primarily Bitcoin and now transitioning to study Ethereum. The course could be even classified as medium-complexity.

  • Applications

The whole second half of the course is dedicated to applications. It discusses different types of blockchains and how they could be integrated in traditional business organizations (- when to use a blockchain solution taking into account its inherent limitations?). Few most obvious blockchain based business projects powered by the Ethereum technology are reviewed in the last lecture.

  • Delivery

The learning material is primarily presented as video and text based lessons. The course includes many links to related external articles, blogs on the Internet. Each video lesson ends with a short quiz while graded assignments are available just in the paid version.

This course is the definitive introduction to blockchain for both the developer and non-developer audience. Beyond the technology, this course will introduce you to some of the philosophy behind decentralization and why there is so much excitement around it.

During the first three modules, you'll be introduced to blockchain and the technology behind it. In module four, we'll go beyond bitcoin and delve deeper into a next-generation blockchain called Ethereum to introduce you to what modern blockchains can do. The use cases featured in the final module are drawn from among the businesses in ConsenSys' startup portfolio. We believe we're uniquely positioned to present you with a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the people and companies working in this space to help give you a better understanding of the business side of blockchain.

Together, we'll examine businesses use cases, hear from industry leaders, and give you the opportunity to develop and analyze a use case yourself. With this course, not only will you be the one who is able to explain blockchain to your colleagues, you'll be well on your way to making educated business decisions with your new, foundational understanding of the technology.
